Dieter Rams, Ten Principles for Good Design

 What is good design?

 1. Good design is innovative - It cannot be exhausted and will advance as technology provides opportunity for innovation.

 2. Good design makes a product useful - A product that has a usable purpose that satisfies a certain criteria. It is also psychological and aesthetic. It focuses on the products usefulness without distracting from it.

 3. Good design is aesthetic The quality of a products usefulness and how they affect our well-being. Only if well executed can it be beautiful.

 4. Good design makes a product understandable The product is self explanatory and clarifies it's structure.

 5. Good design is unobtrusive - A product that fulfills a tool like purpose. It leaves room for the users self-expression.

 6. Good design is honestIt does not exaggerate or convey that the product is worth more. It does not manipulate consumers.

 7. Good design is long-lasting It lasts many years even in todays throwaway society. It is never fashionable or antique.

 8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail Care must be taken in the design of a product. Attention must be given to every last detail.

 9. Good design is environmentally friendlyPreservation of the environment must be considered in a products design. Minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the products life-cycle.

 10. Good design is as little design as possibleConcentrates on the essential aspects and eliminates all non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

Reading Response
The Ten Principles for Good Design by Dieter Rams has taught me what good design is and should be. The item I chose for my first Think and Make assignment is a (AA) battery. The battery is a great example of design is in all the aspects except that its isn't so much environmentally friendly. These rules not only apply to my assignment but possibly even my future career. To hold true to what design is, when creating designs one must not be swayed by an employer or anyone else to ignore ethics. These key essentials of design interest me and will always be considered when I create designs.
